Self-portrait 2023

Birgit Maddox was born in Bietigheim/Baden in 1963 in Southern Germany. Trained in Traditional Printing and Design she developed a keen eye for spatial relations. She was first introduced to photography through a relative who worked at Leica in Wetzlar, East Germany. Starting out with 35 mm, she now works mostly with Medium Format and a new endeavor with Pinhole Photography.

Birgit returns to her European roots every summer, continuously working on projects such as “Endangered” capturing the ways of old, simplicity, raw and pristine land and what is in danger of getting lost. Upcoming projects are "Moments", where she captures decisive, lucid and passing moments and "Mystery" where the lines between art and life blur, where the expression of mystery meets the mystery of expression and her latest series “Epoch Ephemeral” a self-portrait pinhole series.

She returns to her home in Pacific Grove, California, where she does most of her printing. Her work can be found at Photography West, Carmel and the Levin Gallery, Monterey California, Taunus Foto Gallerie in Bad Homburg Germany and the WB Gallery in Zürich, Switzerland. She has won multiple photography awards such as the Julia Cameron Award and the Pollux Awards.

“Most great photography succeeds in scenery, portraiture or framing finesse, with thoughtful and simple composition. It is extremely difficult to capture the passing moment, a subtle gesture or a human emotion. This appreciation of the passing moment and the poetry of being is at the core of “Birgit’s project “MOMENTS.” Her imagery allows us to cease connecting with the present but hold the picture long enough to appreciate and connect with our inner self. This is priceless.
